Escaping the City at The Egg House

In line with what I was saying in my last post, sometimes it can become a little too overwhelming here in the city, and to occasionally get away from the city can come with high costs (monetary, time, energy). A group of young talented graduates from NYU, Parsons, SVA and Pratt Institute with backgrounds in art, interior design and marketing felt the same way, and so The Egg House was born.

A fantasy space that allows one to live momentarily in an imaginary place, The Egg House occupies a space on the Lower East Side, featuring 3,300 square feet with 2 floors and 6 rooms of immersive installations offering a multi-sensory experience, and last Friday, I was invited to escape the city for a brief afternoon here. A little bizarre but entirely cleverly designed, The Egg House essentially forces you to break down inhibitions and open the mind to the imaginary. Upon entrance, I was treated to eggnog and rich macarons with egg designs, then ushered through The Foyer with a photo wall, into The Kitchen of breakfast-themed installations, followed by The Hallway of vending machines, and finally transitioning to The Pool filled with caviar-shaped balls. Behind an even more fluorescent area, The Garden, there is a peephole that looks into The Secret Room, a miniature room that foreshadows The Bedroom.

With snacks provided by vendors from neighborhood breakfast spots Egg Shop and Eggloo, as well as a gift shop offering various egg-shaped “eggcessories,” The Egg House is now open for both New Yorkers and tourists alike to escape the city for an hour or two.

Welcome home, little eggs.

“Because [eggs] are universal,” the founder says. “It can be seen in almost every cuisine. Although each culture interprets it differently, it’s so versatile that everyone can relate to. That’s why we included the egg in different shapes and forms—it creates a familiarity. Eggs also represent breakfast and therefore mornings and energy—everything that is great in this world.”

“This is our first time launching a pop up and it’s obviously very nerve-racking,” the founder says. “We want to do everything to make this happen in the best possible way. If it goes well, we definitely want to bring it to other cities, and we will continue the story of the little egg on Instagram. Now that we have created a life with a past for it, we hope it will have a bright future.”
