CAR PARTY

Last Friday evening, H and I ventured down to Laguna Beach to attend a special preview party of the next-generation BMW 7-series, hosted by none other than BMW! It was the first time in the history of BMW North America that such a preview was held: a preview open to a select audience prior to public introduction, even to the press, and as I had expected, BMW did not hold back on the presentation and festivities.

Attendees were instructed to park at a specific parking lot, and then were shuttled in luxurious party buses, complete with plush black leather seats, to the main venue. I’ve always been an enthusiastic admirer of pretty houses, but this venue completely left me gaping in awe. After being shuttled up a long and winding private driveway and over a wooden bridge, and finally stepping out to be greeted by BMW representatives, we found ourselves standing at a grand circular motor court in front of a  11,000+ square foot contemporary mansion that boasted breathtaking views of the ocean, mountain, and canyons. Words cannot do this house any justice, so if you have the time and the interest, please take a look at this “House of Design” video that gives you an open-house tour of the exterior and interior. Hello, dream house!

Besides the house itself, the BMW team had decked the motor court with the i3 and the i8, as well two of the new 7-series under wraps, and guests were given the freedom of wandering about the house while enjoying delicious hors d’oeuvres (not going to lie; I went gaga-crazy-in-love over the seasoned lamb chops) and champagne. It wasn’t until later in the evening that the much-anticipated BMW flagship sedan was finally unveiled. Imposing and magnificent, it features some amazing pioneer innovations, and I can’t wait until the rest of the world gets to see it physically when it’s revealed later this summer ahead of an official world debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Auto Show in September (in the meantime, you can read some of the already-released specs here). As grand and powerful as the car is, however, I personally think this all-new BMW 7-series is more of a car to be chauffeured in as opposed to drive in. In other words, this car would be a lot more fun if you were a passenger rather than the driver, if you take into account of the plush seats that resemble those on a luxurious private jet and can also mimic a hot stone massage, as well as the ionizing and perfuming feature for the climate control system… and that’s just a tiny tiny teaser! The BMW 7-series goes way beyond those little things and makes my dad’s own classic albeit aging 750li seem quite démodé in comparison.

Unfortunately, because this was a private unveiling event, photography and recording of any kind was strictly prohibited so I have no on-location photos to share with you. It was so strictly prohibited that upon check-in, all guests were subject to body scanners to prevent any cell phones and potential recording devices from being brought in! So instead of photographs of the hush-hush 7-series design and the magnificent mansion grounds, I share with you a brief look at the sweater vest and sweater-dress that kept me nice and toasty through the chilly evening!

Thanks so much for reading!
